Odisha mourns the loss of Er. Priyabrata Dash, a distinguished engineer, Vedic scholar, and social reformer, passed away today at the age of 93.

Born in 1932 in Polasara, Ganjam district, Dash was a multifaceted personality whose life bridged the worlds of modern engineering and ancient Vedic wisdom, leaving an indelible mark on Odia literature, Indian culture, and societal reforms.

Dash, the eldest son of Pandit Lingaraj Agnihotri and Umadevi, pursued his education with excellence. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Bihar College of Engineering (Patna) in 1954 and later earned a postgraduate degree from Brighton, England. His professional career was illustrious, contributing significantly to major infrastructure projects such as the Dandakaranya Scheme, Express Highway Project, and National Highway initiatives. For many years, he served as the Chief Engineer of the state’s Road Research Department. As an active member of the Indian Road Congress for over two decades, Dash played a key role in formulating national codes and standards. He also authored biographies of legendary engineers like Sir M. Visvesvaraya and Dr. Khosla, preserving their legacies for future generations.

However, Dash’s true passion lay in Vedic studies and Odia literature, where he emerged as a pioneering figure. At just 28, his debut book, *Is the Veda Man-Made?*, won the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award and laid the foundation for Vedic research in the state. Honoured by Utkal University’s Sanskrit Department, he went on to author over two dozen seminal works, enriching Odia literature with Vedic insights. His writings, blending Vedic philosophy with scientific inquiry, have seen multiple editions and gained popularity in Europe and America.

As a dedicated social reformer, Dash championed progressive causes through the Arya Samaj principles. His efforts promoted inter-caste and widow marriages, animal welfare, the abolition of caste-based discrimination, and women’s participation in Vedic rituals. Over the past half-century, these initiatives have transformed societal norms in Odisha.

Dash’s passing leaves a void in the realms of engineering, Vedic scholarship, and social reform. He is survived by his family and a legacy that continues to inspire generations. Tributes have poured in from across India and abroad, celebrating a life dedicated to knowledge, culture, and humanity.
