Rourkela Police demolished more than 15 illegal hideouts in Sector-7 during a major operation on June 23. The crackdown followed the murder of local youth Tofan Bindhani, whose killing shocked Steel City.
Police, administration, and Rourkela Steel Plant authorities jointly carried out the demolition drive at Gol Ghar under the Sector-7 Police Station limits. Officials confirmed that abandoned RSP quarters had turned into hubs for substance abuse, drug-related activities, and harassment of women in nearby settlements.
Investigators revealed that the planning of Tofan Bindhani’s murder was allegedly done inside one of these abandoned structures. Family members stated that Tofan opposed drug abuse and anti-social activities, which led to his being targeted by miscreants.
Days earlier, police injured two accused in separate encounters linked to the murder case. Superintendent of Police reiterated that criminals would find no safe haven in Rourkela. Acting on that warning, Tuesday’s demolition eliminated dens that had become shelters for offenders.
Authorities assured that similar action will continue across the city. Police emphasised their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a safe environment for residents.
