At least two people were killed and several others injured in a shooting that occurred on Wednesday evening at a church parking lot in Salt Lake City, Utah, according to local authorities. Police said an active manhunt is underway as the suspect or suspects remain at large.
Local reports indicate that six people sustained injuries, with three listed in critical condition, following the incident. The shooting took place at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 660 North Redwood Road.
Salt Lake City police said they received an emergency call around 7:36 pm reporting gunfire during a funeral gathering at the location.
Altercation Led to Gunfire
Speaking to local media, police spokesperson Glen Mills said that preliminary information suggests the shooting followed an altercation in the parking lot. The exact circumstances leading to the violence are still under investigation.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been informed of the incident and is coordinating with local law enforcement. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the FBI said it was aware of the shooting and was offering assistance to authorities on the ground.
Search for Suspects Continues
Police said the suspects fled northbound on Redwood Road shortly after the shooting. Due to the ongoing manhunt, transportation officials confirmed that Redwood Road would remain closed until at least 1 am.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and report any suspicious activity as the investigation continues.
