Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged that passengers should not face inconvenience amid the ongoing IndiGo flight cancellation crisis.

Speaking to reporters, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Prime Minister emphasised that “people should not be troubled” due to operational disruptions.

“During the NDA parliamentary meeting, the PM told NDA MPs that people should not face inconvenience. Rules and laws are important, but correcting the system should not come at the cost of harassing citizens,” Rijiju said.

The remarks come as Parliament gears up to discuss the IndiGo crisis alongside other legislative matters during the Winter Session. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu is expected to provide updates and outline the government’s steps to restore normalcy in operations.

Impact on Flights

On Tuesday, over 200 IndiGo flights were cancelled, affecting major hubs including Bengaluru (121 flights), Hyderabad (58 flights), Chennai (41 flights), and Kerala (4 flights). In total, more than 4,000 flights have been cancelled across India over the past week, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Although IndiGo has reported stabilisation with a 91% on-time performance, the DGCA has directed the airline to reduce its winter flight schedule by 5%. The regulator cited the airline’s inability to operate its schedule efficiently and instructed IndiGo to submit a revised schedule by 5 pm on December 10.

Government Oversight and Passenger Protection

The government continues to monitor IndiGo’s operations closely. DGCA’s enforcement actions and directives aim to ensure compliance with safety and operational norms while minimising inconvenience to passengers. The Prime Minister’s remarks underline the administration’s commitment to citizen-centric policies even as aviation regulators take corrective measures.
