India received a major boost ahead of the upcoming T20I series against South Africa as star opener and T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill has been officially declared fit to play. The clearance came after he successfully completed an intensive rehabilitation program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Gill had been named in the squad on a conditional basis, pending his final fitness assessment. The 25-year-old suffered a whiplash injury during the Kolkata Test, which required hospital observation and an injection for pain relief. The setback forced him to miss the ongoing ODI series, raising concerns about his availability for the T20 internationals.
Those concerns were resolved this week, with the CoE’s Sports Science team confirming that Gill cleared all stages of the Return-To-Play (RTP) protocols. These assessments included:
-
Strength and conditioning tests
-
Neck mobility evaluations
-
Skill-based match-simulation drills
-
Full-intensity batting sessions
-
High-tempo fielding practice
In a report shared with the Indian team’s Sports Science and Medicine (SSM) staff—including physio Kamlesh Jain, strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux, and team doctor Dr. Charles—the CoE stated that Gill had “met all requisite criteria to be declared fit for all formats of the game.”
Gill’s return comes at a crucial time as India prepares for a busy white-ball cycle, with several major global tournaments approaching. His strong T20I form, combined with his growing leadership role, makes him an essential part of India’s short-format strategy.
All T20I-only players are scheduled to assemble in Cuttack on Saturday. Full-squad training begins Sunday, where Gill is expected to participate completely in preparation for the first T20I.
With Gill cleared to play, India enters the T20I series against South Africa with renewed confidence and nearly full strength—an encouraging sign as the team continues to refine its combinations and build momentum for the upcoming season.
