Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 60th All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police, held at the Indian Institute of Management, Raipur. The three-day conference is themed “Viksit Bharat: Security Dimensions”.

Addressing the nation’s top police leadership, the Prime Minister stressed the urgent need to transform public perception of the police, especially among the youth, through greater professionalism, sensitivity and responsiveness. He called for strengthening urban policing, reviving tourist police units and creating widespread awareness about the three new criminal laws — Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita — that have replaced colonial-era legislation.

The Prime Minister directed police forces to harness Artificial Intelligence, expand the use of NATGRID-integrated databases for real-time actionable intelligence, and encourage universities to conduct case studies on forensic applications in investigations. He also emphasised innovative strategies for securing uninhabited islands, bolstering coastal policing, and adopting a Whole-of-Government approach to combat drug abuse through enforcement, rehabilitation and community intervention.

Highlighting emerging security challenges, PM Modi urged continuous monitoring of banned outfits, holistic development of Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and stronger mechanisms to bring back fugitives sheltering abroad. He called for enhanced disaster preparedness and real-time coordination to tackle cyclones, floods and other natural calamities, including the ongoing Cyclone Ditwah.

In his concluding remarks, the Prime Minister asked police leadership to modernise and realign policing practices with the national vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

During the event, PM Modi presented President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service to Intelligence Bureau officers and conferred the newly instituted Urban Policing Awards to the three best-performing cities.

The conference, attended by Union Home Minister, National Security Advisor, Ministers of State for Home Affairs, Union Home Secretary, DGsP/IGsP of all States/UTs and heads of CAPFs, also featured detailed deliberations on Vision 2047 policing roadmap, counter-terrorism trends, women’s safety, forensic reforms and fugitive tracking.
