Sambalpur Zoo in Motijharan announces a landmark step as four Royal Bengal Tigers arrive for the first time.

The Central Zoo Authority under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change approves the transfer, giving western Odisha a new wildlife attraction.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will lay the foundation stone for a modern tiger enclosure on Monday. The facility will cover 1,500 square metres and provide a safe, enriched habitat for the big cats. Sambalpur Zoo strengthens its conservation role by adding large carnivores to its collection.

The zoo also plans to introduce mugger and gharial crocodiles. A dedicated enclosure will support these reptiles and expand the diversity of species available for visitors. Sambalpur Zoo already houses 17 wildlife species, including a leopard, after receiving official zoo status in 2023.

Zoo officials highlight the importance of this milestone. The arrival of Royal Bengal Tigers enhances biodiversity and creates opportunities for education, research, and eco-tourism. Visitors will witness the majesty of India’s national animal in western Odisha, a region that has long awaited such an attraction.

Sambalpur Zoo continues to evolve from its origins as a deer park. The addition of tigers and crocodiles marks a new chapter in its journey. Conservationists expect the initiative to inspire awareness about wildlife protection and generate greater interest among tourists.

The zoo positions itself as a hub for conservation and cultural pride. With Royal Bengal Tigers joining its roster, Sambalpur Zoo steps into a future of expanded responsibility and growing appeal.
