Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though he admits his participation will depend on his physical condition closer to the tournament.
The 38-year-old football icon, who will turn 39 next June, remains hopeful about representing Argentina once again on the world stage.
In an interview with NBC News, Messi said, “It’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup, and I would love to. I would like to be there, to be well and be an important part of helping my team.” He emphasized that he will evaluate his fitness during the 2026 preseason with Inter Miami before making a final decision.
Messi recently extended his contract with Inter Miami through 2028, signaling that retirement is not yet on his mind. His continued presence in Major League Soccer has already boosted the sport’s profile in North America, especially with the U.S., Mexico, and Canada set to co-host the next World Cup.
Despite a storied club career with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Messi’s international breakthrough came later. He led Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021 and followed it with a historic World Cup win in Qatar in 2022, defeating France in a dramatic final.
Reflecting on that triumph, Messi called it “the dream of my life,” noting it was the only major accolade missing from his professional résumé. With 195 international caps and a record 114 goals, his potential sixth World Cup appearance would further cement his legendary status.
