Air India announced the cancellation of all flights to and from New York and Newark scheduled for Monday, February 23, 2026, due to a severe winter storm that is expected to bring heavy snow and hazardous conditions to the US East Coast.

The airline made the decision in response to blizzard warnings affecting the region, as forecasters predict significant disruptions to flight operations.

Storm Impact on Travel:

The winter storm, which is forecasted to hit New York, New Jersey, and the surrounding areas on February 22-23, is expected to severely impact air travel. The storm is predicted to bring heavy, wet snow, combined with strong winds, making travel conditions extremely dangerous. The airline’s statement emphasized the importance of passenger and crew safety, leading to the suspension of all scheduled flights to these cities.

Air India stated,
“A severe winter storm with heavy snow is forecast for New York, New Jersey and adjoining areas in the US East Coast on 22 and 23 February which is likely to have a significant impact on flight operations. In view of the safety, well-being and convenience of our passengers and crew, all Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on 23 February.”

Efforts to Assist Affected Passengers:

The airline also assured that its teams would be providing assistance to passengers impacted by the cancellations. Passengers are advised to reach out to Air India customer service for rebooking and further assistance.

Blizzard Warnings and “Super Bomb” Storm:

In addition to Air India’s cancellations, 30 million people in the Northeast US are under blizzard warnings. Cities like New York City, Boston, and Long Island are bracing for a massive winter storm that is expected to bring 1 to 2 feet (30 to 61 cm) of snow. Strong winds and low visibility are expected to make travel nearly impossible in many areas.

The storm has been labeled as a “super bomb” by forecasters due to its rapid intensification. Senior forecaster Brian Hurley from the US Weather Prediction Center warned that the storm could be even more dangerous than the one that struck the city in late January.

Mayor’s Warning:

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to stay off the roads and avoid unnecessary travel. In a press conference on Saturday, Mamdani emphasized the severity of the storm, advising all New Yorkers to stay inside for their safety.

Mamdani said,
“I am asking all New Yorkers to stay inside and stay off the roads for your safety. These have the potential to be even more hazardous conditions than we faced the last time around.”

Forecast and Preparations:

Forecasters predict the storm will begin to strengthen by Sunday evening. As the system intensifies, blizzard warnings have been issued for Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and other East Coast areas. In addition to the heavy snow, strong winds and freezing temperatures are expected, causing potential power outages and transportation delays.

Travel and Safety:

With over 1,000 flights already cancelled in anticipation of the storm, air travel is expected to be significantly impacted for several days. The storm’s rapid intensification has prompted authorities to prepare for its possible escalation, and officials have warned of potentially hazardous conditions throughout the region.

Due to the severe winter storm and blizzard warnings in effect for the Northeast United States, Air India has canceled its flights to New York and Newark on February 23. Passengers are advised to stay in contact with the airline for updates. Meanwhile, residents of the affected areas are urged to take all necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel as the storm intensifies.
