Tomas Machac celebrated a landmark victory on Saturday as he claimed his first tour-level trophy at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The 24-year-old Czech defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(6), 6-2 in the final, securing his place in the Top 20 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time in his career.
Machac showcased an exceptional performance, winning 29 consecutive first-serve points and finishing the match with a 95% first-serve points win rate. His dominant serve and aggressive baseline play were key factors in his triumph.
“I’m really happy that I managed to win today because Alejandro was playing really, really good. It was a tough battle,” Machac said. “I was serving really well. I think without the serve today, I don’t think [it would’ve] been two sets.”
With this victory, Machac becomes the third Czech player to win an ATP 500 title, joining the ranks of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek. Machac’s journey to the title saw him rise five places to No. 20 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, a significant achievement given that he was ranked World No. 65 just 12 months ago.
Davidovich Fokina, who was competing in his third tour-level final and second of the season, congratulated Machac on his well-deserved victory.
