The much-awaited Udayagiri Light and Sound Show in Bhubaneswar is finally set to begin, with all major groundwork nearing completion.
A successful trial run has already been conducted, and the project now awaits its final power connection before being opened to the public.
Modern Tech Meets Ancient Heritage
Developed by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the immersive show will be held in front of Rani Gumpha at Udayagiri Hill. Featuring state-of-the-art lighting and a five-microphone surround sound system, the experience will bring alive the rich history and cultural legacy of the Khandagiri–Udayagiri caves, one of Odisha’s most iconic archaeological sites.
Visual projections will illuminate the ancient rock surfaces, while dedicated seating arrangements will ensure visitors can enjoy the show comfortably.
Delays and Restoration Efforts
Although the project was completed in December 2023, it remained non-operational for several months due to administrative delays in obtaining the required electricity connection. Over time, vegetation had grown across parts of the site, drawing criticism from locals and heritage enthusiasts.
Authorities have since taken corrective steps to revive the project, ensuring it aligns with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) guidelines to protect the monument’s structural integrity.
Maintenance and Revenue Model
Under the agreement, ITDC will oversee maintenance and bear the electricity costs for five years following the show’s launch. Ticket revenue will be shared between ITDC and ASI in a 60:40 ratio, ensuring sustainable management of the heritage site.
A senior Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) official confirmed that all pending work would be completed within the next 15 days. The show is expected to be open to tourists by the end of this year, adding a new attraction to Odisha’s capital city.
