Over 70 Students Hospitalised After Midday Meal Contamination in Odisha’s Titilagarh

A disturbing health crisis unfolded in Bolangir district’s Muribahal block today, as more than 70 students from a government school fell ill after consuming a contaminated midday meal allegedly infested with insects.

The incident took place in Tetelekunti village’s Nodal Upper Primary School, where students were served lunch under the state’s midday meal scheme. According to eyewitness accounts, insect contamination was discovered in the meal after distribution had already begun. Unfortunately, many students had consumed the food before this discovery was made.

Following the meal, several students complained of stomach pain, headaches, and nausea. As symptoms intensified, school authorities rushed the children to Titilagarh Hospital using motorbikes and ambulances. By late afternoon, over 70 students were under medical care.

District health officials confirmed that the students’ condition is stable and treatment is ongoing. Residents and parents, however, expressed anger and frustration over what they called negligence on the part of school staff and cooks.

“There is substantial government funding for nutritious meals — yet lack of proper monitoring is putting our children at risk,” said one aggrieved parent.

Speaking on the matter, the SDMO of Titilagarh stated that all affected students are now in stable condition and receiving appropriate treatment.

Authorities have launched an inquiry into the matter, with calls for stricter hygiene protocols and accountability for midday meal management growing louder.
