New Delhi: After Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, Narendra Modi has achieved the honour of being elected as the Prime Minister for the third consecutive term.
This achievement adds another record to Modi’s illustrious political career as in 24 years, Modi has set a unique record by taking the oath of office seven times. He has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat four times and as the Prime Minister of India three times.
Modi first took the oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 at the age of 51. He was sworn in for the second time in December 2002 and subsequently in 2007 and 2012. His tenure as the Prime Minister began with his first oath-taking in 2014, followed by 2019 and 2024.
In India, oath-taking is mandatory for all, starting from the President to the Prime Minister, MLAs and MPs. Article 75 of the Constitution mentions the oath-taking process for the President and the Prime Minister, while Article 75(4) and Article 99 provide for the oath-taking of Ministers and MPs respectively.
Constitutional experts highlight that there are provisions for punitive action against those who breach their oath of office and confidentiality. If the President or the Prime Minister violates their oath, they can face impeachment or suspension, and their membership can be terminated. Additionally, criminal cases can be filed against them. If found guilty, they can face up to two years of imprisonment and may be barred from contesting elections.
