Bhubaneswar: The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) briefed the media on the current heatwave situation and appealed to the general public to take all precautionary measures.
The SRC office issued an advisory for the people to remain alert given the IMD’s forecast for heatwave conditions in Odisha for the next five days.
As per the IMD’s forecast, 19 stations in the state including Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Titilagarh, and Angul have recorded the highest day temperature above 40 degrees C and the heatwave situation may continue for the next 5 days.
The SRC office today informed that so far five sunstroke deaths have been confirmed including one each in Balasore, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur and Bolangir.
As many as 12 cases of sunstroke deaths have been alleged in Sundagarh and six cases in Jharsuguda. Post mortem is being conducted to ascertain the exact reason behind the deaths, the SRC office said in a release.
Odisha SRC Advisory:
– Take precautionary measures for hot weather while going outside during peak hours from 11 am to 3 pm.
– Avoid prolonged heat exposure.
– Wear lightweight and light-coloured clothes.
-Cover your head, and use a wet cloth, hat or umbrella while going out during peak hours.
-Drink sufficient water even if not feeling thirsty to avoid dehydration.
– Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, sugarcane juice, lemon water, and buttermilk to rehydrate the body.
– Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours.
-Schedule strenuous jobs to cooler times of the day.
-Increase frequency and length of rest breaks for outdoor activities.
-Pregnant workers and workers with a medical condition should be given additional attention.
-Do mike advising people on heatwave precautions.
-Keep hospitals in readiness
-Avoid working from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
-All buses should carry drinking water, ORS and ice cubes with them.
-People should wear shoes, chappals and an umbrella and carry water with all the measures.
