During his visit to West Bengal on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, accusing them of obstructing the state’s development and prioritising politics over public welfare.

Addressing a public meeting in Alipurduar, PM Modi criticised the TMC leadership for skipping key national forums such as the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi, suggesting a lack of seriousness in collaborating on developmental initiatives.

“TMC only wants to play politics 24 hours a day. They do not prioritise West Bengal’s development or the country’s progress,” Modi said, alleging that Central Government schemes are not being properly implemented in the state.

The Prime Minister claimed that 16 major infrastructure projects, which should have been completed last year, remain stalled due to the state government’s inaction. He further accused the TMC administration of being “hostile” towards tribals, Dalits, women, and backward classes.

Citing the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, Modi alleged that the state government is preventing eligible beneficiaries from availing benefits by withholding Ayushman cards, and also accused TMC leaders of demanding cuts and commissions from poor families seeking housing assistance.

“Many poor people are unable to get permanent houses because of the TMC’s corruption. When the NDA nominated a tribal woman for President, TMC was the first to oppose her,” he added.

The remarks come amid heightened political tension in the state, with the Prime Minister urging voters to hold the TMC accountable for what he described as a failure to serve the interests of West Bengal’s most vulnerable communities.
