Virat Kohli Stands Firm on Test Retirement Despite BCCI Push

Virat Kohli has reportedly declined all efforts by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider his decision to retire from Test cricket, standing firm on his stance despite mounting pressure from the board and emotional appeals from cricketing legends.

The last two days have delivered heavy blows to Indian cricket. First came the suspension of the IPL 2025 amid escalating military tensions with Pakistan. Then, in a bigger shock, Kohli informed the BCCI of his intent to step away from the longest format of the game — a move that stunned fans and pundits alike.

Though he had quietly communicated this decision to selectors two weeks ago, the news broke publicly on Saturday, sparking widespread debate. Sources told The Times of India that the BCCI was still trying to persuade Kohli to play in the upcoming five-Test series in England starting June 20. With both Rohit Sharma and R. Ashwin already retired from Tests, Kohli’s absence could leave a massive void.

Despite attempts by cricketing greats like Brian Lara, Kohli remains resolute.

“He is still firm on his stance. The final call will come closer to the squad selection meeting next week,” a senior official said.

The 36-year-old star has been battling form and fitness concerns, particularly with his vulnerability outside the off-stump — a flaw repeatedly exposed in recent overseas tours. Although he showed glimpses of his former brilliance with a century in Perth, India’s 1-3 defeat in Australia during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy only reinforced his doubts.

Insiders recall his frustration during the Sydney Test, where he was dismissed cheaply and visibly dejected. Some reports suggest he even murmured, “I am done,” after the series loss — a statement now seen as a sign of his mental drift from the format.

If Kohli walks away without a farewell game, he would join the likes of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag, who also exited quietly from the Test arena. The formal announcement, if it comes, is expected around the time BCCI reveals the new squad and possibly, the next Test captain.
