The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Odisha, forecasting a 2°C to 4°C spike in temperatures beginning Thursday.
Districts such as Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Boudh, and Bolangir are expected to be the worst hit, with heatwave conditions likely to prevail.
Adding to the discomfort, humidity levels are set to climb, especially in coastal areas like Puri, Cuttack, Bhadrak, and Balasore, pushing feel-like temperatures 4–6°C higher than actual readings, as per AccuWeather.
The Nor’wester storms (Kalbaisakhi), which had brought short-lived relief earlier this month, are now weakening. IMD reports that thunderstorm activity is likely to taper off after May 7, reducing any chance of immediate weather moderation.
The extended forecast offers little comfort: oppressive heat and high humidity are expected to persist until the monsoon, which may begin advancing toward South Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 13.
