Rourkela, Odisha’s industrial hub, is shaken by the discovery of a young man’s body in the STI Chowk slum of Raghunathpali on Sunday morning.

The victim, whose throat was slit, has left residents in fear and raised urgent concerns about the city’s escalating crime rate.

The body was found in a slum notorious for criminal activity, with authorities suspecting foul play. The Raghunathpali police have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to identify the victim and uncover the motive behind this gruesome act. “We are working to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the motive behind this heinous crime,” a police official stated.

This incident follows closely on the heels of two murders reported on April 10, 2025, including the killing of a ragpicker in the Gandhi Road area. These consecutive tragedies have intensified scrutiny on local law enforcement, with residents questioning the effectiveness of measures to curb violence.

The STI Chowk slum, along with other areas like Mahatab Road, has long been identified as a hotspot for criminal activity. Despite increased patrolling and checkpoints, vulnerable populations—particularly women and tribal communities—continue to face threats.

The murder bears a haunting resemblance to a 2021 case in Rourkela, where a youth was found with his throat slit behind a local school. As police appeal for public assistance, the steel city grapples with a growing sense of unease and demands for stronger safety measures.
