Odisha’s Works Department has achieved a monumental feat by securing the prestigious Vishwakarma Awards 2025, a coveted honour in the field of civil construction.

The awards, conferred by the NITI Aayog-backed Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), were presented at a grand ceremony held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The accolade recognizes the department’s exceptional work in completing four groundbreaking infrastructure projects that exemplify innovation, resilience, and societal impact.

The awards were received by Vir Vikram Yadav, Principal Secretary of the Odisha Workd Dept, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, who lauded the department’s contributions to nation-building.

These projects, selected for their cutting-edge design and execution under challenging conditions, include the Farmer’s Technology Demonstration Centre at OUAT in Bhubaneswar, the Habisyali Bhawan in Puri, the Cancer Hospital in Bargarh, and the Trauma Care Hospital in Panikoili.

A Triumph of Innovation and Functionality

The Vishwakarma Awards, regarded as the highest civilian honour in India’s construction sector, celebrate excellence in infrastructure development. Odisha’s PWD stood out among numerous contenders, with its projects showcasing advanced engineering, sustainable practices, and transformative community benefits.

  1. Farmer’s Technology Demonstration Centre (OUAT, Bhubaneswar):
This state-of-the-art facility, also known as Krushi Shiksha Sadan, houses Odisha’s largest 1,000-seat lecture theatre, designed for agricultural training and international conferences. Spanning a multi-utility block with seminar halls, dining areas, and basement parking for 119 cars and 362 two-wheelers, the project blends modern aesthetics with functionality. Built at a cost of approximately ₹59 crore, it adheres to international material standards, earning praise for its architectural finesse.

  2. Cancer Hospital, Bargarh:
A G+5 structure within the DHH campus, this 12,682 sqm hospital is a beacon of advanced healthcare. Equipped with a 15 MV LINAC, HDR Brachytherapy, and CT Simulator, it offers comprehensive cancer care with 20 daycare beds, 38 general ward beds, 13 ICU beds, and more. Designed compactly to house radiation units efficiently, the ₹90.27 crore project sets a benchmark for specialized medical infrastructure.

  3. Trauma Care Hospital, Panikoili:
Located near NH-16 in Jajpur, this G+5 hospital is Eastern India’s largest trauma care centre. With 100 beds, dedicated ICUs, burn units, and diagnostic facilities, it ensures critical care for accident and burn victims. Built for ₹101 crore, its strategic design meets stringent safety and clinical standards, making it a lifeline for the region.

  4. Habisyali Bhawan, Puri:
Odisha’s largest residential facility, this G+7 structure near Narendra Tanki accommodates 1,717 Habisyali devotees during Kartik month and 1,224 beds for paid use otherwise. Featuring basement parking, dining halls, and accessible amenities like ramps and lifts, the ₹34 crore project caters to the spiritual and logistical needs of elderly widows observing the Kartik Brata.

A Rigorous Selection Process

The CIDC’s selection process was meticulous, involving on-site inspections, consultations with stakeholders, and evaluations based on design innovation, construction efficiency, site challenges, and maintenance systems. The projects were judged for their ability to overcome constraints, employ skilled manpower, and integrate advanced technology, with Odisha’s PWD excelling in every criterion.

Shri Harsh Malhotra, addressing the ceremony, commended Odisha’s commitment to enhancing public infrastructure, particularly in healthcare and cultural preservation. The awards underscore the state’s strides in creating world-class facilities that uplift communities and set new standards for sustainable development.

A Milestone for Odisha

This recognition marks a significant milestone for Odisha, highlighting the PWD’s role in driving infrastructural progress. The awarded projects not only address critical needs—be it advanced healthcare, agricultural education, or cultural support—but also demonstrate the state’s capacity for innovation under resource constraints.

As Odisha continues to invest in transformative infrastructure, the Vishwakarma Awards 2025 serves as a testament to its vision of inclusive growth and excellence. The PWD’s achievements inspire confidence in the state’s ability to shape a brighter, more connected future for its citizens.
