Pradyumna Bal was not merely an uncompromising politician; he was a steadfast believer in value-based journalism who profoundly elevated the dignity of the media in Odisha. Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy echoed this sentiment during the 94th state-level birth anniversary celebration of the late visionary, held in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, Speaker Padhy emphasized that the current era desperately needs individuals of Bal’s caliber. “He was highly educated and could have easily amassed wealth and power. Instead, he dedicated his life to the development of the nation and society,” Padhy stated. She highlighted how Bal transitioned into the media landscape to drive social reform and political change after facing the harsh realities of politics. He became the voice of the exploited and marginalized, fighting fiercely for fundamental human rights, as well as the protection of land, water, and forests. Urging young journalists to adopt his fearless approach, she reminded the audience of Bal’s core philosophy: “Wealth is not a person’s true identity; values are.”
The commemorative event brought together prominent figures who reflected on Bal’s multifaceted contributions. Mahanga MLA Sarada Pradhan, speaking as the Guest of Honour, praised Bal as the pride of Mahanga soil. He noted that while Bal fell victim to political conspiracies, he effectively channeled his fight for social justice through the press, championing the respect of the Odia race until his last breath.

Former Union Minister Srikant Jena painted a picture of a fiercely outspoken leader who never shied away from speaking truth to power, recalling how Bal offered blunt, honest responses to towering figures like Indira Gandhi and Biju Patnaik. Jena also highlighted Bal’s economic foresight, echoing his belief that industrialization alone cannot bring true prosperity without safeguarding land, water, and forests. Jena took the opportunity to criticize the capitalist exploitation of Odisha’s mineral wealth and warned that recent amendments to the MMDR Act would strip resource-rich states like Odisha of their right to tax mining companies.
State Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan commended Bal’s journalistic integrity, noting his deliberate distance from the modern “breaking news” rat race. “His sole objective was publishing the unvarnished truth. The need for a personality like him is deeply felt today,” Harichandan remarked.
Chaired by Justice Manoranjan Mohanty, President of the Pradyumna Bal State-Level Jayanti Committee, the event also featured the unveiling of a special issue of Avimat chronicling Bal’s life story.
The welcome address was delivered by Birupaksha Tripathy, Executive Editor of Pragativadi, marking a respectful tribute to a man whose principles continue to inspire Odisha’s socio-political and media landscapes.
