Patrapur block in Odisha’s Ganjam district experienced a historic downpour, recording an astounding 546 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period.
According to the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), this deluge stands as the fourth-highest single-day rainfall ever recorded in Odisha’s weather history.
Highlighting past precipitation benchmarks, official records show that Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district holds the record for the highest single-day rainfall with 825 mm in 1991.
Other major extreme weather events include Karlamunda recording 608 mm and Balangir receiving 555 mm of rainfall during severe deluge episodes in 2019.
The SRC noted that such unprecedented, concentrated precipitation led directly to severe flooding, soil saturation, and landslide risks across southern coastal districts.
Emergency personnel, including ODRAF and Fire Services, remain deployed throughout Ganjam to carry out relief, restoration, and evacuation operations while monitoring swollen rivers and waterlogged roads.
