Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, October 30, 2026, issued a direct challenge to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, proposing a special session of Parliament to debate opposition allegations of “vote theft” and electoral roll manipulation.
Speaking at the Uttar Pradesh BJP State Executive Committee meeting in Lucknow, Shah dismissed opposition claims surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, asserting that the ruling party is prepared to face scrutiny on the floor of the House.
Parliamentary Challenge vs Street Ruckus
Sharpening his attack against the opposition alliance, the Home Minister accused opposition leaders of avoiding structured debate in favour of public demonstrations:
”I challenge both Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav right here and now. The BJP is fully prepared to discuss this in Parliament. We have nothing to hide. Let us convene a special session. But they have no intention of speaking there. They refuse to let Parliament function; instead, they just create a ruckus.”
Likening the opposition’s strategy to dissatisfied athletes, Shah remarked that after facing consecutive electoral defeats across various state polls, opposition parties have resorted to “blaming the umpire” by accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of cheating.
Escalating Tensions Over SIR and CEC Impeachment
Shah’s statements arrived hours before the INDIA bloc’s scheduled “public impeachment” event against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, which was delayed to Saturday due to heavy unseasonal rains in New Delhi:
- Electoral Roll Revision Friction: The opposition has intensified protests since early October, demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and a complete halt to the SIR exercise, which reportedly purged approximately 13 crore names (14 per cent of total rolls) across jurisdictions.
- Parliamentary Precedent: Formal notices seeking the CEC’s removal moved by opposition MPs were previously rejected in April by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan.
- Upcoming Demonstrations: The mock impeachment sitting serves as a precursor to the INDIA bloc’s planned mega rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1.
Reflecting on local political dynamics following the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results, Shah maintained that the BJP state government stands immovable like “Angad’s foot,” expressing confidence in securing a third consecutive mandate in the upcoming 2027 UP Assembly elections.
