Inter-caste marriage social boycott

A family in Balangir district was left stranded with a loved one’s corpse for over 17 hours after community members refused to assist with the final rites. The reason? An inter-caste love marriage contracted more than three decades ago.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded in Khalipathar village under the jurisdiction of Belpada police station in Patnagarh sub-division.

According to local reports, the deceased had married outside his caste 32 years ago out of love. While decades had passed and a generation had grown up, the rigid social boycott enforced by local caste groups remained unyielding.

When the man passed away, his family expected that time and basic humanity would soften old prejudices, allowing the community to come together to perform the sacred last rites. Instead, caste kinsmen and neighbours turned a deaf ear. Fearing caste ostracisation themselves, no one stepped forward to help carry the body to the cremation ground or prepare the bier.

For over 17 agonising hours, the deceased lay untouched in his home while his grieving family looked on in utter helplessness.

Faced with unwavering hostility and abandonment by those they considered their own, the deceased’s son finally reached out to local social activists and social workers, pleading for immediate intervention so his father could receive a dignified farewell.

Incidents like the one in Khalipathar highlight the persistent gap between legal progress and rural social reality in interior Odisha. While the law strictly prohibits caste-based discrimination and social boycotts, traditional caste councils (Jati Samajas) in rural belts often exercise immense authority over communal life.

As news of the incident spreads, social activists have urged district authorities and local police to intervene, ensure the completion of the cremation, and strictly enforce anti-discrimination laws against those imposing social boycotts.
