A major security breach occurred at Tamil Nadu’s Theni sub-jail late Monday night, October 26, 2026, when 17 inmates staged a daring jailbreak by feigning a medical emergency to attack prison wardens.
A massive state-wide manhunt has been launched across neighboring districts, resulting in the re-arrest of four escapees by Tuesday morning. Following initial investigations, nine prison staff members, including two head constables, have been suspended for security lapses.
Fake Medical Emergency Lures Prison Wardens
All 17 prisoners were housed in the same cell block when they enacted a coordinated drama, claiming one inmate was suffering from an epileptic seizure. When prison guards entered the cell to assist, the inmates launched a violent assault and fled the premises.
Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar confirmed the sequence of events during a media interaction:
”They were in the same block and enacted a drama as though someone had collapsed due to an epileptic seizure. They then attacked the warden and two others who went to check,” Law Minister Nirmal Kumar stated, confirming four escapees had been secured by Tuesday morning.
The attack left three prison personnel injured. Grade II police officer Thangapandi suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku, while two other officers sustained minor injuries.
17 Special Teams Deployed Across 3 Districts
In response to the breakout, law enforcement agencies formed 17 special search teams and established 16 strategic checkpoints in the neighboring Dindigul district. Dindigul Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar confirmed that high alerts and photo distributions have been issued across Dindigul, Madurai, and Idukki districts.
Police have registered a case and are conducting extensive combing operations to track down the remaining 13 fugitives.
