The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration in Puri is set to introduce a dedicated special darshan facility for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
The initiative aims to ensure that devotees with mobility challenges can seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath smoothly and comfortably, without the hurdles of navigating the bustling temple premises.
The decision was finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida. Initially, the service will roll out on a trial basis, accommodating 20 devotees daily. To ensure fair access for all, an individual will be eligible to use this special facility once every six months.
Seamless Logistics: From Online Booking to Sanctum Sanctorum
The entire process is designed to be streamlined and hassle-free through a dedicated online registration portal, which will launch soon. Once booked, devotees will receive a confirmation message containing their scheduled darshan date.
The step-by-step journey is carefully coordinated to maximise comfort and safety:
-
Arrival & Transport: Devotees will receive on-ground assistance near the Satyanarayan Temple, followed by a ride in battery-operated vehicles to the temple’s North Gate.
-
Wheelchair Access: A specially constructed ramp at the North Gate will allow smooth entry for wheelchair users.
-
Guided Escort: Trained volunteers will assist devotees up to Ghantidwara and escort them to the Jay Bijay Dwara for the final darshan of the deities.
-
Safety & Care: Dedicated police personnel and a medical team will be stationed to provide safety and immediate assistance throughout the visit.
Timing and Rollout
Temple authorities have clarified that the facility will not operate on high-crowd days marked by special rituals and major religious observances. Instead, it will be restricted to regular days to guarantee a safe, unhurried, and peaceful experience.
Expected to launch officially after the holy month of Kartik, this thoughtful initiative marks a significant milestone in making one of India’s most revered shrines accessible to every devotee.
