A major tragedy was averted on Sunday near the Khaliapali Chhak when a passenger bus travelling from Padiabahal to Sambalpur suddenly began emitting dense smoke from within, sparking panic among the travellers on board.
Thanks to the exemplary presence of mind, courage, and swift action of the bus driver, all passengers escaped unhurt.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the bus reached the Khaliapali Chhak area. Suddenly, thick smoke started billowing from inside the vehicle, catching the occupants off guard and creating an atmosphere of fear and panic. Recognising the gravity of the situation instantly, the driver did not hesitate; he immediately cut off the engine, pulled the bus safely to the side of the road, and efficiently coordinated the emergency evacuation of all passengers.
Once every passenger was safely out of the vehicle, a collective sigh of relief echoed through the area. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
While the exact cause behind the sudden smoke remains unclear, preliminary estimates suggest that a technical malfunction or a short circuit may have triggered the emergency. A detailed mechanical inspection is expected to reveal the exact cause.
The alarming incident has once again sparked discussions among conscious citizens and commuters, who emphasise the urgent need for bus owners and transit authorities to enforce regular mechanical checks and rigorous safety protocols for public transport vehicles to ensure passenger safety.
