In a major breakthrough against transnational smuggling, law enforcement agencies in Andhra Pradesh have busted a sophisticated gold smuggling syndicate, arresting five individuals and seizing approximately 3.1 kilograms of foreign gold biscuits alongside foreign currency.
According to intelligence reports, the racket operated by procuring illegal foreign gold from Bangladesh, routing it through Kolkata and Odisha, and ultimately distributing it to buyers in Hyderabad. Despite traversing the vast stretch of Odisha, the contraband went completely undetected by local police and intelligence units, raising serious questions about interstate transit security.
The operation was initiated following precise intelligence inputs shared with authorities in Hyderabad and Vijayawada. A joint team set up strategic intercepts on the outskirts of Vijayawada, successfully intercepting a suspicious Scorpio vehicle. Upon a thorough search, officials discovered a sophisticated secret chamber inside the vehicle containing foreign currency.
Interrogation of the two occupants led to a crucial confession: they had safely delivered a major consignment of smuggled gold near Vijayawada just prior to being stopped. Investigators deduced that the recovered foreign currency was proceeds from the sale of this smuggled gold.
Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the enforcement team tracked down three other members of the syndicate who were attempting to flee toward Hyderabad on a passenger bus. Cornering the bus at a toll plaza, authorities apprehended the trio and uncovered 3.1 kilograms of foreign gold biscuits. The smugglers had devised a clever concealment method, securely wrapping the gold biscuits in pouches and tying them tightly around their waists.
All five suspects involved in the procurement, transport, and distribution network have been placed under arrest and presented before a local court, which remanded them to judicial custody. Further investigations are underway to trace international handlers and local collaborators linked to the syndicate.
