As Bhubaneswar immerses itself in the festive spirit of Durga Puja, the capital city’s grand pandals are pushing the boundaries of architectural replication and scale.
Among this year’s most talked-about highlights are the massive celebrations at Jharpada and Laxmi Sagar, which are drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors with distinct, temple-inspired concepts.
1. Jharpada Durga Puja Samiti: A Blend of Ayodhya and Akshardham
Celebrating its 16th edition on a sprawling five-acre expanse at the Melana Ground, the Jharpada committee has built one of the city’s most ambitious and majestic structures.
- The Theme: Named the “Jagat Janani Temple,” the grand pandal artistically merges the architectural grandeur of Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir with the intricate elegance of the Akshardham Temple.
- Scale & Craftsmanship: Conceptualized four months in advance and budgeted upwards of ₹1.7 crore, the structure took over a month and a half to build. A dedicated team of 30 artisans from West Bengal, working alongside local Odia craftsmen, brought the unified color palette and sacred atmosphere to life.
- Visitor Comfort & Inclusivity: The fully air-conditioned pandal prioritizes convenience, backed by 500 volunteers assisting senior citizens and differently-abled devotees. Free prasad is distributed daily to over 15,000 people.
- Star-Studded Entertainment: Beyond spiritual devotion, daily Bhajan Samarohs and musical nights feature major attractions, including Bollywood star Govinda and Indian Idol fame Jyotirmayee.
2. Laxmi Sagar Pandal: Inspired by Malaysia’s Adiyogi
A short distance away, the Laxmi Sagar Durga Puja committee offers a contrasting yet deeply immersive spiritual experience.
- The Theme: Inspired by the renowned Adiyogi Temple in Malaysia, committee members brought back architectural blueprints and photography from last year’s research to replicate the striking design.
- Pure Silver Craftsmanship: Elevating the artistic detailing this year, all of Goddess Durga’s weapons and ornamental jewelry have been exquisitely crafted in pure silver.
- Safety & Traffic Management: Positioned near a bustling main thoroughfare, the committee has deployed over 150 volunteers (including a strong contingent of women) alongside multiple CCTV security checkpoints and two dedicated parking lots to ensure smooth crowd control.
Together, these remarkable creations highlight how Bhubaneswar’s Durga Puja celebrations continue to evolve, blending deep-rooted faith, high-end craftsmanship, and world-class spectacle for thousands of festive visitors.
