Following a wave of political demonstrations in the national capital, Delhi Police have registered nearly 25 First Information Reports (FIRs) since October 2.
The cases involve alleged violations of prohibitory orders, destruction of public property, scuffles with security personnel, and trespass onto government property across the New Delhi district.
Section 163 BNSS Violations and High-Profile Names
According to police sources, the majority of the FIRs pertain to direct violations of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which restricts public gatherings in designated areas.
Prominent political figures, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have been named in the cases alongside several other MPs from the INDIA bloc.
The legal action follows an unauthorised march organised by opposition leaders from Parliament House toward Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission of India. Police officials stated that no prior permission had been requested or granted for the rally.
Akashvani Bhavan Standoff
When security forces intercepted the march near the Election Commission office, several key opposition leaders initiated a sit-in demonstration. The situation escalated when Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and accompanying lawmakers allegedly entered the nearby Akashvani Bhavan premises without authorisation to continue their protest.
Delhi Police subsequently registered a case concerning the unauthorised entry into the state broadcast facility, citing charges of trespassing and obstruction of government work.
Police Issue Warning Against Upcoming Demonstrations
As tensions remain high in central Delhi, authorities have reiterated that prohibitory orders under Section 163 BNSS remain strictly enforced across the district.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shrishti Pandey warned that protests, sit-ins, and public gatherings are strictly prohibited at all locations, including traditional sites like Jantar Mantar. The police department confirmed that legal action will be taken against any unauthorised gatherings, specifically warning groups planning upcoming demonstrations—such as the proposed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest scheduled for October 10—that non-compliance will lead to immediate police intervention.
