Tension mounted in the capital city today as drivers and operational staff of Odisha’s 108 Ambulance Service staged a heavy demonstration outside the Labour Inspector’s office in Bhubaneswar.
The workers gathered in large numbers to protest against unpaid salaries, missing special allowances, and alleged financial mismanagement.
The unrest escalated further after a crucial scheduled meeting was postponed at the last minute, triggering outrage among the protesting frontline workers.
Allegations of Financial Irregularities
Protesting drivers voiced deep frustration over repeated delays in salary disbursement and non-fulfilment of long-pending promises. According to the workers, special allowances and benefits previously announced by authorities have not yet been credited to their accounts.
“We have a right to know where our hard-earned money has gone,” stated several protesting drivers during the demonstration, suspecting financial negligence or misappropriation of funds allocated for emergency personnel.
Broken Promises & Indefinite Agitation Threat
Demonstrators pointed out that despite repeated appeals, representations, and official assurances in the past, no concrete resolution has been reached. Today’s last-minute delay of the conflict-resolution meeting served as the breaking point for the workers.
The key demands presented by the 108 Ambulance Association include:
-
Immediate release of pending salaries and statutory dues.
-
Payment of promised special allowances and emergency service benefits.
-
Enhanced job security and official recognition of basic rights.
The protesters have warned that they will continue and intensify their agitation if their demands are not addressed promptly.
Crucial Lifeline in Distress
The 108 Ambulance Service serves as the backbone of emergency healthcare delivery across Odisha, operating round-the-clock to rescue patients and transport critical cases to hospitals. Protesters emphasised that while they remain committed to saving lives, their basic livelihoods cannot be neglected.
As of Saturday evening, district and state administrative officials have not released an official response regarding the protest or the allegations raised.
