Speaking at the 107th Foundation Day (Swanakshetra Divas) of the Odia daily, ‘The Samaja’, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi commended the newspaper for maintaining its journalistic integrity for over a century without compromising on core ethics.
The event, held at Rabindra Mandap on Sunday, brought together state ministers, dignitaries, and media leaders to mark the historic milestone.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Majhi paid solemn homage to the founder of The Samaja, Utkalamani Pandit Gopabandhu Das. He recalled how the noble vision conceived at Satyabadi’s Bakulabana in 1919 has grown into a massive banyan tree, continuing to guide the Odia nation through selfless service and social justice.
Media Credibility and the Challenge of Sensationalism
Reflecting on the evolving landscape of mass media, the Chief Minister pointed out that while 24-hour television news channels and social media have drastically transformed news delivery over the last two decades, print journalism continues to retain the public’s trust for fact-based reporting.
However, he expressed concern over the growing commercialization of journalism. “Media credibility today has witnessed a decline compared to the past. Today, true news often gets sidelined by sensationalism, fake news, and agenda-driven narratives,” Majhi said, calling upon national and state media outlets to restore focus on genuine public issues without bias or agenda. He commended The Samaja as a rare exception that has stood firm on its ideals despite shifting trends.
Driving Inclusive Growth Across Odisha
Highlighting the state government’s developmental vision guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Majhi detailed several flagship welfare initiatives aimed at uplifting every section of society:
- Universal Free Education: Odisha stands as the only state in the country implementing complete free education from “KG to PG” (Kindergarten to Post-Graduation).
- Targeted Social Security: Over 5 lakh eligible senior citizens above 60 years have recently been onboarded under social pension programs, ensuring quick delivery without long wait times.
- Welfare & Housing: Enhanced assistance under Annapurna Yojana (providing 5 kg extra free rice), Chief Minister Kanya Vivah Yojana, Kanya Sumangala Yojana, and housing under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana for the most vulnerable families.
- Healthcare & Infrastructure: Expansion of primary education through Godabarish Mishra Adarsha Primary Schools, alongside cashless treatment facilities covering over 80% of the state’s population in private hospitals.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s resolve to build a prosperous Odisha by 2036—coinciding with the state’s centenary—and to contribute toward a developed India (Viksit Bharat) by 2047, emphasizing that responsible journalism will remain crucial to achieving these national milestones.
