A speeding Thar SUV struck a motorcycle near Capital Hospital Square in Bhubaneswar late Tuesday night, killing a 19-year-old youth and critically injuring his friend.
The accident occurred around 12.30 a.m. at one of the busiest junctions in the city.
The deceased has been identified as Raja Pedini, a resident of Tinimundia Chhak in Old Bhubaneswar. He was riding a Bullet motorcycle along with his friend when the mishap occurred.
Reports said Raja and his friend were travelling from Airport Square towards Capital Hospital Square. While attempting a U-turn, their motorcycle was hit by a Thar SUV coming at high speed from AG Square. Despite being close to a major government hospital, the SUV was reportedly moving recklessly.
The impact dragged the motorcycle for several meters. Raja came under the wheels of the SUV and was dragged along the road, while his friend was thrown aside after being dragged briefly.
Witnesses inside the Capital Hospital campus rushed to the spot and shifted both youths to the hospital. Doctors declared Raja dead on arrival. His injured friend was later referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
News of Raja’s death spread quickly, drawing relatives and locals from Old Bhubaneswar to the hospital. Tension gripped the premises as the crowd demanded action. Police from the Capital police station intervened to control the situation and pacify the agitated people.
Police seized the Thar SUV and detained its driver for questioning. By the time relatives arrived, the driver had already been taken to the police station. Investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
