Sambalpur district witnessed a dramatic rescue on Thursday afternoon when a young woman was saved after falling into the Hirakud reservoir.
The incident occurred near a dilapidated Vishnu temple wall under Rengali police station limits.
According to police, the woman hails from the Brajarajnagar area. Around 3 pm, she arrived by auto and walked onto the bridge. After some time, she accidentally slipped and fell into the water. Despite the strong currents, she managed to cling to the wall of the old temple nearly 300 meters away.
Meanwhile, she cried out for help, and passersby noticed her struggling. They immediately informed the police. Acting swiftly, police summoned local boatmen, who rowed to the spot and rescued her safely.
Subsequently, the woman revealed her identity and explained how the incident unfolded. Police later contacted her family members and handed her over to them.
The rescue operation highlighted the quick response of locals and police, preventing what could have been a tragic accident.
