Kolkata Police has imposed a city-wide ban on victory processions, rallies and public celebrations on May 4 as counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 continues.
The move is aimed at maintaining law and order during a politically sensitive period, with authorities stressing the importance of ensuring a peaceful environment across Kolkata.
Restrictions to Maintain Law and Order
According to the official notification, no political party, organisation or group will be permitted to hold public celebrations on counting day. The restriction is part of heightened security arrangements across the city amid closely watched election results.
Police officials have emphasised that the measure is precautionary and intended to prevent disruptions, congestion and any potential law-and-order issues.
Conditional Permission After Counting Day
Authorities clarified that victory processions may be allowed from May 5 onwards, subject to prior approval from the Officer-in-Charge of the respective police station.
All approved events must strictly follow guidelines and conditions set by the administration to ensure smooth conduct and public safety.
Strict Action for Violations
The police have warned that any violation of the order will invite legal action as per existing laws. Officers across all police stations have been directed to remain vigilant and enforce the directive effectively.
Election Trends and Political Context
Early trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party leading in a significant number of constituencies, while the All India Trinamool Congress is trailing behind. Smaller parties, including CPI(M) and others, are leading in a few seats.
The counting process is still underway, and final results are awaited from the Election Commission of India.
High Voter Turnout Marks Elections
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections recorded a notably high voter turnout, reflecting strong public participation. In comparison, the 2021 elections saw a decisive victory for the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee, making this election a closely watched political contest.
Overall Outlook
With counting still in progress and political stakes high, the restriction on victory celebrations underscores the administration’s focus on maintaining peace and stability. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as results unfold.
