In a major crackdown on corruption within the police force, Odisha Vigilance today apprehended Arupa Nanda Das, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Badagaon Police Station in Sundargarh district, while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.
The trap was laid following a complaint from the owner of a roadside eatery (dhaba), who alleged that ASI Das had demanded the money to favourably resolve a pending case involving him and to ensure his business could operate without harassment or interference. The officer reportedly threatened the complainant with arrest if the bribe was not paid.
Acting swiftly on the information received today, a Vigilance team successfully trapped ASI Das in the act of receiving the bribe amount. The entire tainted cash of Rs 25,000 was recovered from his exclusive possession and duly seized as evidence.
Following the successful trap operation, simultaneous searches are currently underway at four locations linked to the accused ASI from the disproportionate assets (DA) angle, as part of a broader probe into possible accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income.
In connection with the incident, Rourkela Vigilance Police Station Case No. 01/2026 has been registered against ASI Arupa Nanda Das under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation is progressing, and further details are awaited.
