Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines has expanded its clean-energy outreach in Odisha by installing 406 solar-powered streetlights across 21 villages in Jharsuguda and Sundaragada districts under Project Jyoti.
The initiative is benefiting nearly 22,000 residents and improving safety, mobility and access to public spaces in the region.
The streetlights have been installed in villages and settlements including Jamkhani, Girisima, Jharpalam, Hemgir, Bileimunda, Kuraloi, Lakhanpur and Belpahar Municipality. To ensure long-term performance, the company has put in place a maintenance system with quarterly inspections and preventive checks on batteries, wiring, dust buildup and structural stability.
The project has been especially helpful for women, senior citizens and daily commuters by making streets safer and movement easier after dark. According to Vedanta Aluminium Coal Mines CEO Amares Kumar, the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to building safer and more connected communities through sustainable solutions.
A resident of Bileimunda, Uttar Naik, said the solar lights have made evenings safer and public spaces more accessible. Project Jyoti also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals on health, clean energy, sustainable communities and climate action.
