India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australian partner Matthew Ebden progressed to the second round of the men’s doubles event at the US Open 2023 tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The Indo-Australian tennis pair, seeded sixth in the tournament, defeated the Aussie duo of Aleksandar Vukic and Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.
Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden and Aleksandar Vukic-Christopher O’Connellin went toe-to-toe in the first set and the scores were tied at 4-all at one stage.
The Indo-Australian pair finally managed to edge ahead with a break point in the ninth game and held their serve in the tenth to pocket the first set.
The 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden made a breezy start to the second set and dominated their opponents to seal their place in the second round.
The Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden pair reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last month. The duo also won the Qatar Open in February and the Indian Wells title in March.
Rohan Bopanna, who partnered Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski at Wimbledon 2023, will be in action in the mixed doubles event next on Thursday. In New York, Rohan Bopanna will pair up with Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi. The Bopanna-Sutjiadi pair will face Andreas Mies and Vera Zvonareva in the first round.
