The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday released the draft electoral roll of Uttar Pradesh following the completion of the enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The updated list reflects the deletion of approximately 2.89 crore voters across the state.
According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa, the state’s electoral roll, which earlier included 15.44 crore registered voters, has now been revised down to 12.55 crore voters after the verification process.
Election officials explained that the revision was carried out to ensure greater accuracy, transparency, and inclusivity in the electoral database. The removed entries include names of voters who are deceased, those who have shifted their residence, and duplicate registrations identified during the review.
A detailed breakup of the deletions shows that:
-
46.23 lakh voters (2.99%) were removed due to confirmed deaths
-
2.17 crore voters (14.06%) were deleted after relocation to other constituencies or states
-
25.46 lakh voters (1.65%) were identified as duplicate entries
The Election Commission stated that the Special Intensive Revision is a routine but crucial exercise aimed at maintaining updated and error-free electoral rolls, thereby strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that every eligible citizen’s vote is accurately represented.
The draft electoral roll is now available for public review, and eligible citizens have the opportunity to submit claims or objections within the stipulated period before the final roll is published.
