In a notable step toward sustainable and affordable energy solutions, two brothers from Uttarakhand have developed an eco-friendly biogas cylinder that produces up to 18 kg of clean cooking fuel at a cost of just ₹500.

The innovation leverages cow dung as a primary raw material, converting organic waste into usable energy. This initiative reflects a growing focus on renewable energy alternatives and presents a viable solution for households grappling with rising LPG prices.

Sustainable ‘Waste-to-Wealth’ Model

The biogas cylinder is based on a “waste-to-wealth” approach, where agricultural and organic waste is repurposed into valuable fuel. By utilizing cow dung, the system not only reduces environmental waste but also contributes to cleaner energy production.

Experts suggest that such decentralized energy solutions could play a crucial role in improving energy access, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions where affordability and availability remain key challenges.

Affordable and Practical Energy Alternative

One of the standout features of this innovation is its cost-effectiveness. At ₹500 for approximately 18 kg of fuel, the biogas cylinder offers a significantly cheaper alternative compared to conventional LPG cylinders.

Additionally, the cylinder is designed to be portable, making it convenient for everyday household use. The affordability and accessibility of raw materials further enhance its practicality for widespread adoption.

Environmental Benefits

The use of biogas helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lowers carbon emissions. It also supports better waste management practices by converting organic waste into energy, aligning with India’s broader sustainability goals.

Potential for Wider Adoption

As interest grows in renewable energy solutions, this innovation is gaining attention as a scalable model. With proper support and infrastructure, such technologies could benefit communities across the country and contribute to long-term energy security.
