The Government of India has moved swiftly to restrict imports of high-purity silver bars, citing heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The Commerce Ministry announced that silver bars of 99.9% purity, previously under the “Free” import category, will now require special permits under the “Restricted” category.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification confirming that the revised rules take immediate effect. Alongside 99.9% purity bars, other specified categories of silver bars have also been shifted to the restricted list.
Officials emphasised that the decision aims to strengthen monitoring and regulation of silver inflows into the country, ensuring tighter oversight during a period of global uncertainty.
The move underscores India’s proactive stance in safeguarding its trade interests while balancing domestic market stability.
