Tiger Woods, 50, was arrested on Friday for driving under the influence after his Land Rover overturned near his Jupiter Island home in Florida.
Authorities confirmed that Woods clipped a truck while attempting to overtake on a two-lane residential road, causing his vehicle to flip before coming to a stop. He escaped without injury.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods showed signs of impairment but passed a breathalyser test. “He did exemplify signs of an impairment… He’ll pay the price, but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail,” Budensiek stated.
Woods refused to take a urine analysis test, leading to charges of DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Drug recognition experts at the scene believed Woods was impaired by medication or drugs, though under Florida law, he was entitled to refuse the test.
“We will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash,” Budensiek told reporters. He added that the crash could have been worse given the narrowness of the road.
The sheriff noted that Woods slid a considerable distance before coming to a stop. He emphasised that the speed limit in the area was 30 miles per hour, but declined to specify Woods’ speed.
Neither Woods nor the other driver sustained injuries. Authorities released Woods’ mugshot and confirmed that he remains in custody.
