J&K: Five Army personnel were killed and six wounded as terrorists ambushed a military convoy in the secluded Machedi region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Monday afternoon.
The wounded were transported to a hospital for medical care.
In the initial assault, terrorists lobbed a grenade and opened fire. The security forces responded, but the assailants escaped into the adjacent forest, according to officials.
The incident follows recent engagements in the Kulgam and Chinigham areas, where six terrorists were killed in two different encounters in Jammu and Kashmir, Brigadier Prithviraj Chauhan, Commander 1sec RR, said on Monday that the killing of terrorists in South Kashmir is a significant blow to Hizbul-Mujahideen.
“Our troops responded to the terrorists’ fire. We are awaiting further details,” said defence officials.
The Army vehicles were on a routine patrol on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road when attacked about 150 km from Kathua.
This is the second attack on the Indian Army in the Jammu region in the past 48 hours. On Sunday army camp in Rajouri district was attacked injuring one soldier.
There has been an increase in terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir over the past few months.
In June, security forces neutralized three terrorists during an encounter in the Gandoh, Bhaderwah sector of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, according to ADGP Anand Jain.
