Tata Trusts has accepted N Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons, bringing his nine-year tenure at the helm of the Tata Group closer to an end.

Chandrasekaran’s current term as chairman of Tata Sons is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027. Tata Trusts said it respects his decision and acknowledged his contribution to the group.

“The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust respects Mr. Chandrasekaran’s decision not to offer himself for reappointment,” the trust said in a statement on Thursday.

The trust also placed on record its “deepest appreciation” for Chandrasekaran’s contribution and stewardship of Tata Sons and the wider Tata Group over the past decade.

Tata Trusts begins process to find successor

With Chandrasekaran set to leave the chairman’s post after his current term, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has decided to initiate the process of identifying his successor.

According to the statement, the trustees have passed a resolution to set up a Selection Committee as soon as possible in accordance with the Articles of Association of Tata Sons.

The committee will recommend a candidate for appointment as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tata Sons.

Chandrasekaran’s nine-year tenure

Chandrasekaran took charge as chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 and has led the conglomerate through a period of significant expansion and transformation.

During his tenure, the Tata Group strengthened its presence across several sectors, including technology, automobiles, aviation, electronics and consumer businesses.

His decision not to seek another term comes as the group prepares for its next phase of leadership.

The announcement also sets the stage for a closely watched succession process at one of India’s most prominent business groups, with the new chairman expected to guide the Tata Group through its next chapter.
