Tamil filmmaker Vikram Sugumaran, widely known for his debut film Madha Yaanai Kootam, passed away due to a cardiac arrest on Monday morning.
The 47-year-old director reportedly suffered severe chest pain while returning from Madurai after narrating a script to a producer. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors were unable to resuscitate him.
Sugumaran’s sudden demise has left the Tamil film industry in mourning. Several prominent figures, including actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, paid heartfelt tributes to the late director on social media. Sugumaran, who started his career as an assistant director to legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra, was praised for his unique storytelling and ability to capture the raw essence of Tamil culture in his films.
His last directorial venture, Raavana Kottam, featured Shanthanu Bhagyaraj in the lead role and received critical acclaim for its narrative depth. The industry now remembers him as an auteur whose contributions will remain timeless. He is survived by his wife and children.
