A special court in Chennai has sentenced Gnanasekaran to thirty years of imprisonment for his involvement in the Anna University sexual assault case.
The verdict, delivered by Justice Rajalakshmi, comes after the Mahila Court found him guilty on all eleven charges earlier this week.
The incident took place on December 23 of last year when Gnanasekaran, a biryani stall owner near the Anna University campus, allegedly entered the premises and assaulted a female student and her male friend. The prosecution presented documentary and forensic evidence to support the charges, leading to a decisive conviction.
Authorities revealed that Gnanasekaran recorded the assault and attempted to blackmail the victims. He was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police and has remained in judicial custody since. In addition to his prison sentence, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 90,000.
This case highlights the importance of stringent legal actions against perpetrators of gender-based violence, reinforcing the need for safer educational environments across India.
