The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to file an affidavit regarding the NEET-UG paper leak case, underlining that millions of students cannot be left disheartened by irregularities in such crucial examinations.

A bench observed that meritorious students who work tirelessly to pursue medical education must not be deprived of their rightful opportunities. The court emphasised that NEET-UG must be conducted with complete fairness and transparency.

The apex court also said it will monitor the investigation for a few days to ensure accountability. It directed that the National Testing Agency (NTA) be strengthened to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. The bench added that responsibility must be fixed if similar lapses occur in the future.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, informed the court that the government has devised a new mechanism to ensure transparency in the conduct of NEET. He said the Prime Minister is personally reviewing the matter.

Meanwhile, the All India Medical Association and United Doctors Front filed separate petitions seeking the dissolution of the NTA, citing repeated controversies. The NTA has already submitted an affidavit detailing its preparations and measures for conducting NEET-UG.

The Supreme Court clarified that its directions aim to safeguard students’ interests and do not cast aspersions on any particular judge or institution.
