The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a strong El Niño by late September, with monsoon likely to reach Odisha around the Raja festival period.
IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra explained that rainfall may remain below normal in northern Odisha, while southern and central regions could receive normal or above-normal showers. He noted that El Niño has not yet formed over the Pacific Ocean, but conditions may strengthen by the end of September.
According to Mohapatra, temperatures will stabilise between July and August as El Niño moves into a moderate phase. From June to September, rainfall may reach about 90 per cent of the long-term average. The forecast suggests that Kerala will see monsoon onset first, followed by Odisha within a week, coinciding with Raja celebrations.
The IMD highlighted that advancing monsoon winds will increase atmospheric moisture, leading to humid and sultry weather across the state. Residents may experience sticky conditions along with heat until widespread rainfall begins.
The El Niño phenomenon remains the major concern for Odisha’s rainfall distribution. While southern and central districts may benefit from adequate showers, northern districts could face deficits. The IMD continues to monitor evolving oceanic conditions to provide timely updates.
