Tension gripped the Gandhinagar area of Berhampur after a group of unidentified miscreants armed with sticks and machetes launched a brutal late-night attack on a stray dog.
The disturbing incident, captured on CCTV cameras, has sparked outrage among locals and raised serious concerns about law and order in the area.
According to sources, the incident occurred between 3 to 4 am on Seventh Line Road under Berhampur Town Police Station limits. Residents were jolted awake by the frantic barking and cries of the stray dog. Upon rushing outside, they witnessed a group of 8-10 youths fleeing on motorcycles.
CCTV footage revealed the horrifying sequence: three youths arrived on a motorbike, stopped in front of the unsuspecting dog, and began mercilessly beating it with sticks. As the helpless animal tried to escape, more miscreants appeared and attacked it relentlessly, leaving the dog unconscious.
Locals rushed to intervene, forcing the assailants — some carrying machetes — to flee the scene. Residents now fear the attack could have been part of a larger criminal motive, possibly to silence the dog during a planned robbery.
“This is beyond cruelty. They had weapons and attacked so openly. Tomorrow, it could be one of us or an elderly person,” a local shopkeeper said, expressing concern over the growing lawlessness. He is now caring for the injured dog, which remains immobile due to the assault.
The incident has left the community shaken, with calls for swift police action to trace the culprits and prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
