In one of the most dramatic matches of Asia Cup 2025, Sri Lanka survived a spirited challenge from Hong Kong China to register a hard-fought win in a Group B encounter on Monday.
Chasing 151, Sri Lanka appeared in control before Hong Kong staged a stunning comeback, taking 4 wickets in just 13 balls to reduce the Lankans to 127/6 with 23 runs still required from 17 deliveries. But a crucial no-ball from Hong Kong captain Yasim Murtaza in the 18th over proved to be the turning point. Wanindu Hasaranga took full advantage of the free hit, smashing a six and swinging the momentum back to Sri Lanka. He finished unbeaten on 20 off 9 balls, guiding his team home with seven balls to spare.
Earlier, opener Pathum Nissanka anchored Sri Lanka’s innings with a gritty 68, but he was given as many as four lifelines thanks to Hong Kong’s sloppy fielding — part of six dropped catches overall. This is only the third time in T20I history a batter has been dropped four times in an innings.
Hong Kong’s batting was powered by a 61-run stand between Anshuman Rath and Nizakat Khan, helping them post a competitive total of 150. Despite the heartbreaking loss, captain Murtaza remained positive:
“We dropped a few catches and that cost us the game. The positive thing is to be playing on the big stage. Dream come true. Once we go back, we will work on a few things,” he said after the match.
With this win, Sri Lanka move to the top of Group B, setting up a crucial clash against Afghanistan. The upcoming Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match will be decisive for the group’s qualification scenario.
