Union Minister for Textiles, Giriraj Singh, announced that the Centre has decided to declare Odisha as a tussar silk state.

This initiative aims to focus on the development and welfare of silk producers and weavers in the region. Odisha is a significant contributor to India’s tussar silk production, with 29 out of 30 districts involved in handicraft works and home to 3.5 lakh artisans and handloom weavers.

The Textile Ministry has discussed the announcement with Odisha’s chief secretary. The move will help Odisha produce the maximum quantity of tussar silk, aiding India in becoming the largest silk producer globally. The Centre, in collaboration with the state government and the National Silk Board, plans to develop Odisha as a hub for silk production. One district will be selected for textile sector development with proper market linkage, and this district will also be promoted as a tourist attraction to benefit weavers and boost local tourism.

Additionally, the Union Budget has been significantly increased, and Odisha is expected to benefit from enhanced railways, highways, and port infrastructure allocations. The minister also addressed the public health crisis of cancer in Odisha and other states, announcing the establishment of daycare centres for free treatment of cancer patients. Lastly, the Centre plans to introduce air connectivity to 120 new destinations, with at least five new airports expected to be established in Odisha.

State Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, BJP state president Manmohan Samal, and former president Samir Mohanty were also present at the announcement.
